YOGA
at eau de vie, Oxford.
The practice of yoga has stood the test of
time, with the first documented signs dating back over 5000
years. These ancient teachings are highly effective techniques
to strengthen the body and calm the mind with a view to harmonise
and attain balance in all aspects of life.
'the purpose of yoga is to reduce disturbance
and return an individual to his or her inherent peace and power.'
T.K.V. Desikachar
The sanskrit word Yoga means 'union' or 'to
yoke', referring to the union or deep connection of mind and
body. In the west yoga tends to refer to the physical aspects
of the practice, the postures or 'asana' and breathing or 'pranayama'.
The postures/ asana were passed down and
refined over 5000 years. The aim to open the body through relaxation
and stretching of muscles, creating openness, strength, flexibility
and awareness, so that practitioners could sit and meditate.
Stimulating circulatory system, soothing the central nervous
system, yoga effects all areas of the body, even organs and
viscera are stretched and massaged, heart rate and blood pressure
lowered.
Whilst moving through the asana the focus
is the breath, in most practices it is used as a form of counting,
on the inhale and on the exhale. In this way it can be seen
as a form of moving meditation, quietening the mind, releasing
constrictions and massaging the body bringing about a relaxed
state of calm.
To dispel a few myths, yoga is not a religion
it is a system of practices, if done regularly the body gets
stronger, healthy, more able to heal itself and there is a glimpse
of moments of the quiet mind. Anyone can practice yoga, it can
be done from a chair. You don't have to be bendy or flexible,
all our bodies are different, what is easy for one is a test
for another. Over time deep tensions dissolve and you will experience
changes in your body and mind. It is a never ending process.
The joy is to experience your body just as it is today, in this
moment.
We currently offer one to one yoga tuition
and one to one yoga therapy. Yoga therapy is always adapted
to the individual so youset the pace of the session. We are
happy to welcome small groups of 2-6 people in order to make
yoga more financially accessible.
